Congratulations Participants
Welcome! Congratulations on your selection to the ASB Jamaica, which is S.E.R.V.E's first international trip. As with your mandatory meetings, you will also be required to post regularly. Hopefully, this will give you a chance to learn about the other participants on our trip, besides our regular meetings. For your first post, I would like give me one piece of information you still remember from the documentary, Life and Debt, and tell me why you think it is relevant to our trip.

I response to prompt posted by Jade...
My name is DJ Mounga and I am the Co-Leader to Jade Cowan. This is a little late on the time frame of when this was actually supposed to be posted, but better late than never! I hope that you all continue to follow our ASB group on our journey to Jamaica and keep in contact with us throughout our adventures!!!
As far as what I learned in the DVD, "Life and Debt" I would have to say that in corresponding with VIJON and Stephanie, the theme that stands out in my mind and that I feel is very relevant in preparation for this trip is differences. Yes, Jamaica is a different country from the U.S., and that's obvious, but I think if I wouldn't have watched the DVD I could have fell way to my own biases. Simple ones at that and as I put the corresponding emails together from Stephanie with the DVD, it all makes sense.
Jamaica is going through or has been going through hard financial times over the years. It's effects are felt throughout the country from all social statuses...especially the working class (maybe that's more of a similarity, than difference)! But the point is, me, being a participant and volunteer I need to realize that I'm not going to change Jamaica overnight and all the ideas that "I" feel will be the solution will be the right approach. So I need to take a step back on this trip and ask myself, "What can I do while I am here to meet the needs of these people?" I think having that kind of service mind set will help me get the most out of my experience. Jamaica doesn't need anymore ideas or opinions from outside sources, Jamaica knows what needs to happen to change and to make them successful, WE need to respect that and help where we can!
I hope that this mentality is displayed while down there for our short stay and that the impact we do make will have lifetime effects!
One Week Jamaica!!! Here we come!
